Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a phone call on Sunday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ahead of his scheduled visits to London, Brussels and Rome for discussions related to the peace process, her office stated.

Earlier in the day, the outgoing U.S. envoy for Ukraine said that an agreement to end the conflict was “really close,” with two major issues still unresolved. The Kremlin, however, indicated that some U.S. proposals would need “radical changes.”

According to Meloni’s office, she restated Italy’s position following what she called a wave of “indiscriminate” Russian strikes on civilian areas and confirmed that Italy will send emergency assistance to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and civilian needs.

The statement noted that generators provided by Italian companies are expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.

Meloni also reiterated support for ongoing diplomatic efforts and for U.S.-led initiatives aimed at achieving a “just and lasting peace.” She welcomed Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate “in good faith” and encouraged Russia to respond with similar openness, the readout said.

Zelenskyy is expected to meet with European leaders in the coming days as part of ongoing consultations on ending the nearly four-year conflict.
