Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, said on Sunday that he may choose not to run for president in next year’s election.

This marks a shift from his statement on Friday, when he said his father had selected him as the Liberal Party’s nominee — a development that unsettled markets expecting a more experienced contender to unify the political right.

After attending a religious service, he said that a final decision would be announced on Monday.

“There’s a possibility I won’t go all the way,” he said, noting that withdrawing would come “at a price.”

He did not specify whether that “price” referred to Congress voting on legislation that would pardon individuals convicted of invading and damaging government buildings in January 2023 during protests over the election outcome.

“I just want you to think about what’s at stake in Brazil and how much it’s worth for me to withdraw my candidacy.”

Former president Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing figure, is serving a 27-year sentence after being found guilty of attempting to orchestrate a coup following his 2022 defeat to left-wing leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
