South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema held a media briefing earlier today announcing the shocking news that deputy president Floyd Shivambu is leaving the party. The two launched the party together more than a decade ago. Shivambu is said to join South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma’s Mkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party). A former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) spokesperson, Shivambu in 2013 left the then ruling party, ANC amid a disciplinary process against him and Malema.
While at the time the ANC could not proceed with disciplinary action against Shivambu for misconduct, the ANC expelled Malema. Malema and Shivambu then went to launch the EFF. Floyd Shivambu, who has been a prominent figure in the EFF since its inception, cited personal and ideological differences as the primary reasons for his resignation.
During his statement, Shivambu mentioned that his party membership had expired and he chose not to renew it. Additionally, he stepped down from his role as a parliamentarian. Shivambu declared that he will not do or say anything to compromise the organization that they founded. Further stirring the political scene, Malema predicted that many others would follow Shivambu out of the EFF, likely aligning with him in the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. Speaking during an EFF press briefing, Malema described Shivambu’s departure as something painful.
