US Maintains Missile System in Philippines Amid Rising Tensions with China, Tests Wartime Deployment

The United States has decided to keep a mid-range missile system, the Typhon, deployed in the Philippines, despite Chinese objections, and is currently testing its operational feasibility for potential regional conflicts. The Typhon system, which can be outfitted with cruise missiles targeting Chinese sites, was initially brought in for joint military exercises earlier this year but has remained in the Philippines.
The strategic location of the Philippines, particularly its proximity to Taiwan, is crucial for U.S. military plans in Asia. Philippine officials confirmed that training with the Typhon is ongoing, with no immediate plans to withdraw the system, even though the joint exercises conclude this month.
China and Russia have criticized the missile deployment, warning that it escalates tensions in the region. Recent months have seen increased confrontations between Chinese and Philippine forces in the contested South China Sea.
Philippine army spokesman Colonel Louie Dema-ala stated that the decision regarding the Typhon’s duration in the country rests with the U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC). The Typhon, designed for mobility, is being tested for its effectiveness in the local environment, preparing for potential future deployments.
Despite assurances from Philippine officials that the missile system poses no threat to China, Beijing has condemned its presence, claiming it risks escalating regional conflict. The U.S. military has been increasing its arsenal in the Indo-Pacific, including plans to purchase over 800 SM-6 missiles and additional Tomahawks.
The Typhon, capable of launching missiles with ranges exceeding 1,600 km, was hailed by U.S. officials as a significant milestone in U.S.-Philippines military cooperation. A satellite image confirmed the Typhon’s continued presence at Laoag International Airport in northern Philippines, contradicting earlier expectations of its immediate removal.
