Russia launches one of the biggest aerial barrages in months but Ukraine says no critical infrastructure hit.
Ukraine’s air force reported a successful defense against one of the largest aerial assaults by Russia in recent months. On Wednesday, Ukrainian forces intercepted and shot down all 89 drones and one missile launched by Russia overnight, with the main target being Kyiv and its central region.
The Kyiv military administration confirmed that more than 40 drones were downed over the capital and its outskirts. While there was damage to buildings from falling debris, there were no reported casualties.
In a statement, the Ukrainian air force described the drones as “Shahed-131/136 strike drones,” highlighting the scale of the attack. Air raid alerts were issued for Kyiv and much of central and eastern Ukraine starting from 20:00 GMT on Tuesday.
This drone assault marks the seventh attack on Kyiv in July, according to Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration. During the assault, approximately 11,500 residents took refuge in metro stations as the drones approached from multiple directions.
The successful interception underscores Ukraine’s growing capabilities in countering aerial threats amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
