Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for a unified response from Islamic countries against what he describes as “the growing threat of expansionism” from Israel. This statement follows the reported killing of a Turkish-American woman by Israeli troops during a protest against settlement expansion in the West Bank.
Speaking at an event for an Islamic schools’ association near Istanbul, Erdogan asserted that only a coalition of Islamic nations could counter what he termed Israeli “arrogance,” “banditry,” and “state terrorism.” He also suggested that recent diplomatic efforts by Turkey to strengthen relations with Egypt and Syria are part of a strategy to build solidarity against perceived threats to Lebanon and Syria posed by Israeli actions.
Erdogan’s comments come on the heels of a recent visit by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Ankara, marking the first presidential visit between the two nations in 12 years. During their discussions, they focused on the ongoing Gaza conflict and ways to repair their historically strained relationship. Turkey’s diplomatic outreach has also extended to regional rivals such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, aiming to ease tensions and foster cooperation.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from Israel regarding Erdogan’s statements.
