Taiwan Official Warns of China’s Capability to Shift Military Drills to Conflict

A senior Taiwanese security official has raised concerns about China’s increasing ability to swiftly transition military exercises into full-scale attacks, following recent large-scale drills around the island. This assessment comes amid ongoing tensions, as China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has ramped up military activities in the region.
China staged extensive drills, including the participation of a record 153 aircraft and 25 naval vessels approaching Taiwan’s contiguous zone. The official described these actions as an unprecedented increase in pressure, aimed at shortening Taiwan’s response time.
The official emphasized that the drills indicate a growing capability for China to turn military exercises into conflict. Despite not launching missiles directly at Taiwan during this round of drills, the exercises included missile launch practice, signaling a serious military posture.
In response to the heightened military activity, Taiwan has been proactive in its defense strategies. The Taiwanese military deployed mobile missile launchers to strategic locations ahead of the drills, demonstrating its readiness to respond to potential threats.
Taiwan’s defense ministry reported that China conducts three to four joint combat readiness patrols per month, which it describes as provocations that increase military threats. Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo indicated that future drills could occur at any time under various pretexts.
Despite the ongoing military threats, most Taiwanese citizens remain relatively unalarmed, and recent drills have not significantly impacted the financial markets. Taiwan’s central bank governor assured lawmakers that appropriate preparations are in place for potential conflicts.
Conclusion
The warnings from Taiwanese officials highlight the escalating military capabilities of China and the urgent need for Taiwan to maintain vigilance and preparedness. As tensions continue to rise in the region, the potential for conflict remains a pressing concern, with both sides monitoring each other’s actions closely.
