Russia has declined to support a UN initiative aimed at uniting nations to address 21st-century challenges, including climate change, artificial intelligence, and rising inequality. Speaking at the Summit of the Future in New York, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin emphasized that the summit’s outcome documents do not impose obligations on Russia due to a lack of consensus.
The “Pact for the Future,” approved by the UN General Assembly, calls on the leaders of its 193 member nations to translate promises into actionable steps benefiting over 8 billion people. The pact was adopted during the two-day summit convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who highlighted its potential to foster collaboration among nations.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed support for the pact, stating that maintaining the status quo is not an option. He underscored the need for the UN system to adapt to contemporary realities, asserting that the core principles of the UN Charter must remain intact.
The adoption of the pact was uncertain until the vote, leading Guterres to prepare multiple speeches in anticipation of different outcomes. The agreement now sets the stage for nations to work together on pressing global issues.
