PM Carney, Xi Jinping Set for Talks in South Korea

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday at 4 p.m. local time (0700 GMT) in South Korea, according to the prime minister’s office.
Carney arrived in Asia earlier this week aiming to strengthen trade and security ties in the region, as Canada seeks to reduce its heavy reliance on the United States and expand into new markets. China is Canada’s second-largest trading partner after the U.S.
The prime minister has previously highlighted the importance of renewing comprehensive engagement with China after several years of strained relations. Under the leadership of Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, Canadian citizens were detained and executed by Chinese authorities, Canadian security agencies determined that China interfered in at least two federal elections, and Xi publicly criticised Trudeau, accusing him of leaking private discussions to the media.
In August, China imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, a year after Canada implemented a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles. Senior officials from both countries discussed the canola and EV disputes earlier this month, though no immediate resolution was reported.
During a recent visit to Beijing by Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand, her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi expressed China’s hope to improve communication, reduce interference, and rebuild mutual trust with Canada.
