Peter Mandelson Removed as UK Ambassador to US Amid Epstein Scandal

Peter Mandelson, the former British ambassador to the United States, was dismissed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer following the disclosure of emails that revealed extensive connections between Mandelson and the late convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, known for his long political career and behind-the-scenes influence, lost his prestigious diplomatic role after some of his correspondence with Epstein came to light this week.
Despite Prime Minister Starmer’s initial strong support for Mandelson—especially with an important state visit by then-U.S. President Donald Trump approaching—public pressure grew after the revelations. Trump himself has faced scrutiny over his own alleged associations with Epstein, though the White House denied the authenticity of a purported birthday message from Trump to Epstein.
Documents released by U.S. lawmakers included a letter from Mandelson referring to Epstein as “my best pal.” Media outlets also published emails where Mandelson appeared to advise Epstein to seek early release from jail in 2008, when Epstein was sentenced for soliciting a minor.
The UK Foreign Office stated that these findings showed Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein was far more extensive than previously known at the time of his appointment, and Prime Minister Starmer requested Mandelson’s removal based on this “new information.”
Mandelson expressed deep regret over his association with Epstein, admitting he had maintained the relationship “far longer than I should have,” and claimed he had been misled by Epstein’s deceptive nature.
Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, was known to have connections with powerful figures, including members of the British royal family. Prince Andrew was stripped of official duties due to his own ties to Epstein, though he denies any wrongdoing.
Initially, Starmer had praised Mandelson’s efforts, especially in helping negotiate trade deals between the UK and the U.S., but Mandelson’s past controversies eventually caught up with him. He had previously faced criticism for spending time on a yacht owned by a sanctioned Russian businessman and had been forced out of government roles before.
Despite warnings from within the Labour Party about appointing Mandelson, Starmer had hoped the former politician could strengthen UK-US relations under the Trump administration.
After reviewing the new evidence, Starmer acted swiftly to remove Mandelson, describing the ambassador’s emails as “reprehensible.” However, some party members argued that the prime minister should have acted more quickly, highlighting concerns about his handling of other recent political controversies.
With challenges like sluggish economic growth, looming tax hikes, and rising opposition support, Starmer’s leadership is under increasing scrutiny. One Labour lawmaker, speaking anonymously, criticised the timing and management of Mandelson’s dismissal as “a total mess,” saying the issue should have been addressed immediately once it became public.
