North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and top Russian security official Sergei Shoigu held talks on deepening strategic dialogue between their countries. The two leaders engaged in a comprehensive discussion about regional and international issues, reaching a consensus on increasing cooperation to safeguard mutual interests.
Kim emphasized North Korea’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Russia as part of their strategic partnership. This meeting comes amid ongoing allegations from the United States and Ukraine that North Korea is aiding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by providing rockets and missiles, in exchange for economic and military support from Moscow. Both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied these allegations but have vowed to strengthen military ties, formalizing their strategic partnership in a June summit.
Shoigu, who previously served as Russia’s defense minister until May and is now the secretary of the Security Council, signaled a shift towards closer relations with North Korea during his visit to Pyongyang last year. His visit, marked by his presence at a North Korean military parade showcasing nuclear-capable missiles and attack drones, was notable as the first visit by a high-ranking Russian defense official since the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991.
