The uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party has announced its intention to appeal the decision made by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to uphold an objection against former President Jacob Zuma, who is also the leader of the MK party, as a candidate for the party’s list of individuals to be elected to Parliament after the May 29 polls.
Today marks the deadline for individuals to submit applications against objections raised against them at the Electoral Court.
The decision to exclude Zuma from the candidate list was made subsequent to the public inspection process of the candidate list, which occurred last week.
Nhlamulo Ndlela, spokesperson for the MK party, stated, “We are going to be appealing it. Our attorneys are currently reviewing the matter, assessing its merits, and we will accordingly file an appeal.”
“uMkhonto we Sizwe, as a party, successfully navigated a legal process in the Electoral Court, ensuring its placement on the ballot paper. It’s crucial to clarify that there’s a misconception that President Zuma’s image or a leader’s image should be on the ballot. In reality, it’s the emblem or logo of the political party that will be displayed. Thus, it’s not an individual’s face per se,” Ndlela elaborated.
