Microsoft announced on Saturday that approximately 8.5 million Windows computers and devices worldwide were impacted by a recent global IT outage. The disruption was triggered by a corrupted update issued by the security firm CrowdStrike, which caused significant issues from Thursday into Friday.
In a blog post, Microsoft stated, “We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines.” The glitch led to widespread system problems, disrupting daily operations for both businesses and individuals.
The impact was severe: thousands of flights were grounded, broadcasters were forced off air, and many customers experienced interruptions in essential services, including healthcare and banking.
Ciaran Martin, former head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, remarked on the incident, saying, “We’ve talked for a long time in the industry about the inherent fragility of foundational parts of the internet. These small elements of infrastructure, when they malfunction, can have serious global consequences.”
Microsoft and CrowdStrike are working together to address the issue and restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.
