Kenyan President William Ruto has nominated Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President, following the Senate’s recent vote to impeach Rigathi Gachagua. The nomination was made on Friday and received unanimous approval from Parliament.
However, the situation has become complicated as the High Court in Nairobi issued an order halting Kindiki’s appointment until next week. The court’s ruling suspends both Kindiki’s appointment and the Senate’s resolution regarding Gachagua’s impeachment until October 24, when a panel of judges appointed by the Chief Justice will review the matter.
Additionally, a second court order stipulates that Kindiki cannot assume office until the case is heard. Gachagua was impeached while hospitalized late Thursday, adding further complexity to the unfolding political drama.
Stay tuned for updates as this situation develops.
