Kenya Airports Authority Seeks to Avert Strike by Aviation Union

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced that it has developed contingency plans to ensure the smooth operation of airports amid a looming strike by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union. The strike, scheduled to begin on August 19, poses a potential disruption to airport services.
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union, representing staff at airports and Kenya Airways, has threatened to strike in response to a proposed deal with India’s Adani Airports Holdings. The deal involves the development of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya’s largest airport. The union’s concerns center around potential job losses and the hiring of non-Kenyan workers, referring to the deal as the “intended sale” of the airport.
In response to these concerns, the Kenyan government has clarified that the airport is not for sale and that no final decision has been made regarding the proposed public-private partnership aimed at upgrading the facility.
The KAA, along with the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, and the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, is engaged in discussions to address the union’s concerns and find a resolution that prevents disruption to airport operations.
