Indian Prime Minister Modi Makes Historic Visit to Kyiv Amid Ongoing Conflict

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv on Friday for crucial talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This visit, the first by an Indian leader since Ukraine gained independence, comes at a critical juncture as the conflict with Russia continues.
Modi’s visit follows his recent trip to Moscow, which marked his first overseas journey of his new term and drew criticism from Kyiv. India has consistently called for a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine but has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion, aiming to balance its strategic partnership with Moscow—a key supplier of arms and a major player in countering China’s influence.
India’s economic engagement with Russia has intensified, with the country becoming the largest importer of Russian crude oil last month. This increase in trade underscores India’s role as a significant economic ally for Russia amidst global sanctions.
Modi’s arrival in Kyiv, timed just before Ukraine’s Independence Day, is also notable given his recent two-day visit to Poland, where he strengthened ties with the NATO member. During a press conference in Warsaw, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing that “no problem can be solved on the battlefield.” He expressed India’s readiness to support peace efforts alongside its international partners.
The visit is set against a backdrop of intensified conflict, with Ukrainian forces recently launching a major offensive into Russian territory. Ukraine is working to broaden global support for its peace plan, which includes the withdrawal of Russian troops. The upcoming U.S. presidential election adds another layer of uncertainty, as potential shifts in American policy could impact Ukraine’s international backing.
During his stay in Kyiv, Modi is expected to discuss a broad range of bilateral issues with Zelensky, including trade, infrastructure, and defense. Both countries have expressed interest in revitalizing trade, which has diminished during the war.
Modi and Zelensky have previously met on the sidelines of G7 summits, including their June meeting in Italy. This visit highlights India’s strategic diplomacy and its efforts to navigate complex global dynamics while fostering international relations.
