Firefighters successfully halted the spread of the Hughes Fire north of Los Angeles on Thursday, preventing further destruction after the blaze spread rapidly earlier in the week. Located about 80 kilometers north of the city, the fire broke out on Wednesday and has since prompted evacuation orders for 31,000 residents and warnings for another 16,000 people in the affected areas near Castaic Lake and Santa Clarita.
Despite battling two other wildfires on the eastern and western flanks of the city that have been raging for over two weeks, emergency services managed to contain 24% of the Hughes Fire by Thursday afternoon an improvement from 14% earlier in the day. Smoke from the fire continues to blanket the region, affecting air quality and visibility in the surrounding hilly terrain.
Fire crews remain on high alert as they work to prevent further spread of the fire while protecting communities in the path of the blaze.
