Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has stated that he will not travel to Washington for talks at the White House if U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza is part of the discussion, according to two Egyptian security officials.
On February 1, during a phone conversation between Trump and Sisi, the U.S. president invited Sisi to visit the White House, a move previously confirmed by Egypt’s presidency. However, a specific date for the visit has not been set, a U.S. official noted.
The Egyptian presidency and foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Trump’s plan, which calls for the permanent displacement of over 2 million Palestinians from Gaza, has caused outrage in the Arab world. The plan includes U.S. control of Gaza and aims to transform it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” Trump has asked Egypt and Jordan to accept the displaced Palestinians. The plan was discussed during a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah at the White House on Tuesday, where the king appeared uneasy.
Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza and is a significant recipient of U.S. military aid, has repeatedly made it clear that it will not take part in the large-scale displacement of Palestinians.
