On Thursday, at least fifteen members of Mali’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS) were killed in a violent confrontation with jihadists near Diallassagou in the Mopti region. The soldiers, who were on patrol to protect local farmers, were ambushed by jihadists affiliated with the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
The attack occurred on a hillside, where the jihadists, armed with motorcycles, vehicles, and small arms, launched a sudden and intense assault. The Malian army responded with heavy fire, resulting in a prolonged and deadly exchange. The casualties included one gendarme and fourteen members of the national guard, with several others reported injured or missing. The attackers reportedly suffered minimal losses.
This clash underscores the persistent security challenges in central Mali, where jihadist groups continue to operate with impunity. These groups have been known to control local areas, enforce their own laws, and hold around 150 civilians hostage, exacerbating the region’s instability despite ongoing military and security efforts.
