The Democratic Republic of Congo has requested military assistance from Chad to help tackle a growing insurgency by the M23 rebels, who are allegedly supported by Rwanda, in the eastern provinces of Congo. This was confirmed by a Chadian official and a source from the Congolese presidency.
On Tuesday, Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration met with Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno on behalf of President Felix Tshisekedi, as stated in a post on Chad’s official Facebook page. However, the specifics of their conversation were not made public.
A Chadian official with knowledge of the talks mentioned that Chad is considering the request for military support but has yet to reach a decision. A Congolese presidency source also confirmed that Congo had formally asked for both military and diplomatic assistance from Chad, but did not provide further details and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Chad’s government spokesperson, Gassim Cherif, did not respond to requests for comment, and Tshisekedi’s spokesperson, Tina Salama, said she had no additional information on the matter.
Last week, Chad’s Foreign Affairs Minister told reporters that the idea of sending military support to Congo was nothing more than speculation.
