Colleen Makhubele has officially resigned from her position with the South African Rainbow Alliance (Sara) and has joined the uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party. This move represents her third shift in political affiliation within the past three years.
Makhubele’s departure from Sara follows the party’s controversial stance on the 2024 election results, which Sara claimed were rigged. At the first press briefing of MK after the election, Makhubele voiced strong criticisms of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and expressed admiration for former President Jacob Zuma, referring to him endearingly as “ubaba.”
In her resignation announcement, Makhubele defended her decision, stating that her transition to MK was not an impulsive choice but a well-considered one. She revealed that she had been in discussions with MK since the election results were announced and had taken several months to weigh her options before making the switch.
Makhubele also addressed the challenges faced by Sara, including internal disputes with former Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota. The formation of Sara was intended to create a coalition of minority parties, but Makhubele acknowledged that the vision did not materialize as planned. She argued that unity among black political forces is crucial and believes MK is now better positioned to advance this objective.
By joining MK, Makhubele hopes to contribute to a more unified approach among black political parties, emphasizing the need to set aside individual ambitions in favor of collective progress.
