Bulgaria is investigating a Sofia-based company for its potential role in supplying pagers that exploded while being used by Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon. Authorities reported that the attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday resulted in at least 37 deaths and over 2,900 injuries, marking a significant escalation in violence.
The Bulgarian state security agency (SANS) announced that it is coordinating with tax authorities and the interior ministry to assess the involvement of a company registered in Bulgaria in the delivery of communications equipment to Hezbollah. SANS noted that there are no records of the devices entering the European Union legally through Bulgaria, and customs had not registered these items.
The inquiry follows a report by Hungarian news outlet Telex, which cited anonymous sources claiming that a Sofia-based firm, Norta Global, had imported the pagers and facilitated their delivery to Hezbollah.
In response to the situation, Taiwan’s Gold Apollo, whose trademark was found on the pagers, has denied manufacturing the devices and instead implicated its Budapest-based partner, BAC Consulting KFT. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are focused on tracing the supply chain and determining the origins of these dangerous devices.
