Britain May Tighten Rules for Migrants Seeking Permanent Residency

Britain may strengthen rules for migrants seeking permanent residency, Britain will consider tightening conditions for migrants to settle permanently, applicants might need to prove their value to society, interior minister Shabana Mahmood will announce the plan on Monday.
The proposal aims to counter the growing support for the populist Reform UK party, Reform UK has influenced Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party to adopt tougher immigration policies, currently most migrants can apply for “indefinite leave to remain” after five years of residence, this status grants the right to live permanently in Britain, Mahmood will say the government is thinking about requiring migrants to pay social security contributions, maintain a clean criminal record, and avoid claiming benefits to qualify, additional criteria under consideration include high-level English proficiency and community volunteering, a consultation on these proposals will begin later this year.
Reform UK has suggested replacing “indefinite leave to remain” with a five-year renewable work visa, Starmer accused Reform UK of planning a “racist policy” involving mass deportations, immigration remains a critical issue for British voters, controlling immigration was a key reason for the 2016 Brexit vote, despite this, net arrivals reached record levels post-Brexit.
