Ballistic Missile Fired from Yemen Intercepted by Israel’s Defense Forces, Fragments Land Near Modiin and Jerusalem
Jerusalem, Israel – January 5, 2025 – Sirens were heard across central Israel, including Jerusalem, at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Friday after a ballistic missile was launched toward the country from Yemen. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) immediately responded, activating their missile defense systems, successfully intercepting the projectile in mid-air.
Despite the successful interception, fragments from the missile reportedly fell in several locations. One of the pieces landed near the central city of Modiin, while another was reported to have fallen in the settlement of Har Gilo, located just outside Jerusalem.
Footage shared on social media showed a projectile falling from the sky, followed by a large explosion near Modiin. Local residents described the incident as alarming, as the explosion sent shockwaves through the area, but fortunately, no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have emerged.
The IDF is currently investigating the event to determine the exact cause of the missile’s trajectory and how fragments came to land in populated areas. Military experts note that, in past instances, partially intercepted missiles have sometimes crashed with their warheads intact, resulting in significant damage.
Yemen-based Houthi rebels, who have previously launched missiles at Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region, have not claimed responsibility for this attack. The missile’s interception is seen as a success for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, which has become crucial in protecting the country from a variety of aerial threats in recent years.
The IDF’s swift response to the missile threat highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Israel from regional adversaries. As tensions in the Middle East continue to evolve, Israel’s military forces are remaining on high alert to defend against potential threats from neighboring regions.
The latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the volatile security environment in the region, and the need for continued vigilance in the face of missile and other aerial threats.
As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to remain alert and follow safety protocols in case of further threats.
