On 8 October 2024, members of Kenya’s national assembly voted to impeach Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on grounds that included corruption, undermining the government and ethnically divisive politics. Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was then ousted from office, October 17, after being impeached in an unprecedented political saga that has gripped the nation.
In a historic move, the Senate voted to impeach Gachagua on five of 11 charges, after a similar motion was overwhelmingly approved by the lower house National Assembly. the next few months will determine Kenya’s political landscape and where to from here.
