Germany Vows Stronger Defense Ties with Baltics Amid Russia Threats

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to the security of the Baltic states on Thursday, calling their defense “inseparable” from Germany’s own. His comments come amid heightened concerns over Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics in the region.
“The security of the Baltics is also our security in Germany,” Wadephul stated ahead of his diplomatic visit to Estonia and Denmark. He emphasized the importance of deepening military and strategic cooperation in response to what he described as Russia’s use of both conventional and unconventional methods to destabilize NATO’s eastern flank.
Wadephul’s visit aims to strengthen trilateral security arrangements and discuss NATO’s continued presence in the region, particularly in the context of cyber threats, disinformation campaigns, and increased Russian military activity near the alliance’s borders.
Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have repeatedly urged NATO allies to maintain a robust deterrent posture, citing growing security concerns following Russia’s actions in Ukraine and its broader military assertiveness in Eastern Europe.
Wadephul is expected to hold talks with Baltic and Danish counterparts over the coming days to explore joint defense initiatives and reaffirm Germany’s leadership role in European security.
