Malawi Celebrates Completion of 100% Free InnerCity Mission School

A few months ago, we shared the joyous moment when the foundation stone was laid in Nsunge, Malawi, for what would become a symbol of hope the 15th fully free InnerCity Mission School. It was more than just a groundbreaking ceremony; it was the beginning of a promise, a declaration that quality education would reach even the most underserved children in this part of Africa.
Today, that promise has been fulfilled. The construction is complete, the doors are open, and the school stands tall ready to serve its purpose. In a country where thousands of children are often excluded from school due to poverty, this development marks a significant milestone, not just for Malawi, but for the entire continent.
Driven by the unwavering commitment of the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International (COFI), the InnerCity Mission School in Malawi is part of a growing network of schools that provide completely free education. From early childhood learning to primary schooling, every child enrolled receives free tuition, free learning materials, and even daily meals all in a secure and nurturing environment.
The vision behind this school is rooted in compassion and responsibility. As Pastor Chris Oyakhilome so profoundly said:“Remember, every child is your child! Help children, don’t ignore children. They are our extension; they are our future. No matter how dirty or untouchable they are, think again. You were just that small one day, but you were fortunate to have someone help you.”
These words reflect the heartbeat of the InnerCity Mission: to ensure no child is left behind due to circumstances they didn’t choose. The Malawi campus joins other schools in West Africa and India, forming a global network of care and opportunity for the world’s most vulnerable.
But this school is more than buildings and books. It is a pathway to freedom. Education has the power to break the cycle of poverty and equip the next generation to thrive. In Malawi, where challenges such as child labor, early marriages, and lack of resources prevent thousands from ever entering a classroom, the arrival of this free school is a transformative gift.
COFI’s broader education initiative is holistic, addressing the deep-rooted causes of educational inequality. Alongside the schools themselves are programs such as the Back to School Campaign, Education in Emergencies, and the Girl Child Education movement. Each of these programs is designed to remove barriers and ensure that every child, regardless of background, can succeed.
The new school in Nsunge represents hope. It’s a place where dreams are not only born, but nurtured. It is proof that change is possible when we open our hearts and take action. And while this is a celebration, it is also a call to remember the millions of other children still waiting for their opportunity.
As the students step into their new classrooms, bright-eyed and full of possibility, we are reminded once more that education is not a luxury it is a right. And today that right has been honored in the most beautiful way.

Let this be a reminder: the mission is still ongoing, and there is room for more hands, more hearts, and more partnerships to carry the light of education to every corner of the continent.
