The United States has issued a clear warning to the Venezuelan government, threatening to impose additional sanctions if it continues to refuse the repatriation of its citizens from the U.S. On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed that the U.S. would impose stricter and escalating sanctions unless the Maduro administration agrees to facilitate a regular and uninterrupted flow of deportation flights. Rubio stated on social media, “If the Maduro regime fails to comply, new sanctions will be enforced.”
The Venezuelan government, under President Nicolás Maduro, has consistently rejected U.S. sanctions, deeming them unlawful and accusing them of being part of an “economic war” designed to destabilize the country. Despite this, Maduro and his supporters have frequently praised Venezuela’s ability to withstand the impact of these sanctions. At the same time, however, the Venezuelan government has also acknowledged that the ongoing sanctions have worsened certain economic hardships and shortages within the country.
