The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) have called for a joint summit to address the escalating crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The summit, which will be attended by key regional leaders, aims to find a solution to the ongoing conflict that has seen deadly fighting between the DRC and Rwanda over the past 12 days.
DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, the primary parties involved in the conflict, are expected to be present at the summit. The decision for a joint summit was made following a gathering of the East African Community last week, with SADC agreeing to the move at a summit held in Harare on Friday.
Kenyan President William Ruto confirmed that Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan had agreed to host the summit, which will be held in Tanzania. Ruto further explained that ministers from the participating countries would meet on Friday to discuss the details, with the summit itself scheduled for Saturday.
The summit seeks to foster dialogue and collaboration between the two regional blocs to resolve the ongoing tensions in the DRC, with the broader aim of bringing peace to the region. Both SADC and EAC leaders are hopeful that the summit will result in concrete actions to de-escalate the violence and find a lasting solution to the crisis.
