Australians have successfully defeated the Albanese Labor governments plan to legislate censorship via the Misinformation Bill. The proposed laws, which threatened online platforms with fines of up to 5 per cent of their annual revenue for failing to curb misinformation, had sparked fierce opposition. A win for free speech and a reminder that truth can’t be legislated. This comes after the Australian government was set to ban social media use for under 16s. Social media platforms breaching the age restriction rules will face fines of up to $50 million. This is censorship disguised as child protection.
