The United States has voiced serious concerns regarding a report indicating that Russia may be conducting a covert war drones project in China. Allegedly, a Chinese company is providing lethal assistance to a Russian firm that is under U.S. sanctions.
While the White House stated there is currently no evidence of the Chinese government’s awareness of these transactions, it emphasized that China has a responsibility to prevent its companies from supplying lethal aid to Russia for military use.
Samuel Bendett, an adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), emphasized that China would likely be cautious about risking international sanctions by supporting Moscow’s military efforts. He noted that more evidence is needed to confirm any claims regarding China hosting the production of Russian military drones.
Bendett cautioned that China has good reasons to proceed with caution. He stated, “If a factory were to officially exist that manufactures UAVs for Russia, it could expose China to severe sanctions, making it unclear how far China would be willing to go in this matter.”
