Most Motorists Stranded on N3 in KwaZulu-Natal Rescued; Some Still Trapped in Snow

Most of the motorists stranded in the heavy snow along the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal have been assisted, although some individuals remain trapped, according to the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) on Sunday.
After spending two nights in their vehicles due to the severe weather, many road users have now been rescued, with ongoing mop-up operations continuing. While most roads have been cleared of snow, authorities have kept them closed to incoming traffic, except for the section between Van Reenen and Montrose, where recovery efforts are underway.
Progress is being made on clearing the Van Reenen Pass, which has been significantly affected by abandoned trucks. However, it remains closed as rescue operations continue. GCIS warned that even on cleared roads, conditions are still hazardous, with lingering snow making surfaces slippery and visibility poor.
Both Wilge and Tugela Plazas are currently closed to traffic. The N5 from Bethlehem to Harrismith is open, but dangerous driving conditions persist about 30 kilometers from Harrismith due to melting snow, making travel on this route strongly discouraged. Meanwhile, the N11 Route between Ladysmith and Volksrust is open, but drivers face misty conditions through Majuba Pass, prompting warnings against unnecessary travel.
In the Free State, the Border Management Authority (BMA) has temporarily closed certain ports of entry as a precaution. Travellers seeking to enter Lesotho are advised to use alternative ports, including Ficksburg Port, Caledonspoort, and Monontsha.
For those still trapped in snow in the Free State, the GCIS urges individuals to remain in their vehicles, signal for help, and wait for assistance from disaster management authorities and police. “It is safer to stay inside your vehicle and wait for help,” they advised, emphasizing that leaving the vehicle should only be done if assistance is clearly visible nearby.
