Chinese and Russian Naval Forces Kick off Second Phase of Joint Military Exercise

The ongoing joint military exercise between China and Russia has entered its second phase, featuring live-fire drills in the Sea of Japan, as announced by the Russian Defense Ministry. This exercise coincides with a joint coast guard operation, underscoring the robust security and defense collaboration between the two nations.
The Northern/Interaction-2024 joint exercise commenced with an opening ceremony at a Russian naval port, after which warships from both countries proceeded to the designated exercise zone. According to a press release from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, the drills will focus on various objectives, including maritime and air escort, defense alertness, air defense, anti-missile tactics, and live-fire exercises. A Chinese commander noted that the drills have evolved to incorporate standardized procedures and realistic combat scenarios.
The joint naval detachment departed from Vladivostok, with exercises scheduled throughout the week in the Sea of Japan. Chinese naval forces, including destroyers Xining and Wuxi, frigate Linyi, and supply ship Taihu, rendezvoused with Russian ships on September 9 to conduct the first phase of drills, which continued until September 15.
Military experts indicate that these consecutive exercises reflect an increasing strategic partnership between China and Russia, contributing to global peace and stability, given their status as permanent members of the UN Security Council.
In addition to the naval drills, the coast guards of both countries conducted joint exercises near Peter the Great Bay from September 16 to 20 and initiated joint patrols in international waters of the North Pacific on September 21. This cooperation in military and law enforcement activities highlights a commitment to maintaining international maritime order and enhancing ocean governance, according to experts.
