A second wave of deadly explosions struck Lebanon on Wednesday, triggered by hand-held radios covertly converted into explosive devices carried by Hezbollah members. The blasts resulted in at least 20 deaths and over 450 injuries, shocking the nation. This incident followed a previous attack involving exploding pagers that killed at least 12 people and injured around 2,700.
Hezbollah attributed the pager explosions to Israel, with U.S. and other officials suggesting that Israel concealed explosives in Taiwanese-made pagers sent to Lebanon. While the Israeli military did not claim responsibility, it indicated intentions to take stronger actions against Hezbollah.
The explosions have occurred amid ongoing tensions, with both sides engaging in cross-border strikes over the past 11 months, especially following Hamas’s attacks on October 7. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the country is shifting its focus and resources towards the northern border in response to the evolving conflict.
One of the recent explosions occurred at a funeral in Beirut’s southern suburbs, causing panic among attendees. The Lebanese Telecommunications Ministry condemned the attacks, labeling them as criminal acts allegedly perpetrated by Israel.
