Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Advocates for Compromise Between EU and China to Prevent Trade War

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized the need for dialogue and compromise between the European Union and China, advocating against the potential for a trade war. Speaking at the Mondragon Industrial Park in Kunshan, near Shanghai, Sanchez addressed concerns surrounding the European Commission’s investigation into Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and the possibility of significant tariffs.
The EU’s scrutiny of Chinese EVs and the proposed tariffs have sparked renewed negotiation efforts from China, which is seeking to overturn the potential duties. Sanchez highlighted the importance of avoiding economic conflict and fostering cooperative relations.
“I have to be frank,” Sanchez said. “We need to reconsider our positions—not only among member states but also within the Commission.” He stressed that Europe and China should focus on building bridges rather than engaging in a trade war.
The EU has recently adjusted some proposed tariffs, and a final vote by member states is anticipated in October. Sanchez, who was on a state visit to China, met with local business leaders and officials, and reiterated Spain’s commitment to strengthening trade relations with China.
In his meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping earlier this week, Sanchez expressed hopes that the EU and China could resolve their differences without damaging their trade and investment ties. “Spain aims to consolidate growth in trade and investment with China, particularly in green and innovative industries, while avoiding the negative impact of geopolitical tensions,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez’s remarks underscore Spain’s stance on maintaining a balanced and constructive approach in international trade relations, especially amidst the evolving dynamics between Europe and China.
