Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Adviser, arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for high-stakes discussions aimed at navigating the fraught relationship between the United States and China. Sullivan, greeted at the airport by Yang Tao, China’s foreign ministry chief for North American and Oceanian affairs, and U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, is set to engage in meetings that span through Thursday.
Sullivan’s visit comes amid a period of strained relations that have tested diplomatic channels during President Joe Biden’s administration. The visit is focused on maintaining open lines of communication in a relationship that experienced significant breakdowns throughout 2022 and 2023. Although no major announcements are anticipated, the meetings could pave the way for a potential final summit between President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping before Biden’s term ends in January.
According to Da Wei, Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, the primary objective of Sullivan’s visit is to sustain the stability achieved in U.S.-China relations over the past year. He emphasized that the visit aims to prevent any new crises that could impact the bilateral relationship in the final months of the Biden administration and influence future U.S.-China interactions.
