US provides Maryland $60 million to rebuild Baltimore bridge

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is giving funding for emergency work after the Francis Scott Key Bridge was struck by Dali, a 984-foot Singapore-flagged ship that lost power when attempting to leave the Baltimore Harbor. The funds will provide help as the state government works on the reconstruction and repair of the bridge. The ship, which carried around 4,700 containers, hit the bridge in the early morning hours on Tuesday after losing propulsion. The incident left six people dead. The collapse of the bridge halted traffic in one of the busiest U.S. ports. Federal officials told Maryland leaders that it could cost up to $2 billion to rebuild the bridge. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
The bridge came tumbling down early on Tuesday after a massive cargo freighter that had lost power plowed into the structure in Baltimore Harbor. Two bodies have been recovered and four others are missing and presumed dead, believed to be trapped in a vehicle beneath concrete and steel that fell into the water.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore had requested the $60 million earlier on Friday, and within hours the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration approved the request to fund emergency work.
Such funding typically takes days, but President Joe Biden told reporters on Tuesday he directed the federal government to “move heaven and earth” to quickly rebuild the bridge, which forms part of a highway looping around Baltimore.
