Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith is scheduled to visit North Korea in October at the invitation of leader Kim Jong Un to attend celebrations marking the anniversary of the country’s ruling party, according to North Korean state media.
The visit is notable as foreign heads of state rarely travel to North Korea, which remains subject to international sanctions and restrictions on foreign visitors due to its nuclear and missile programs.
Vietnam’s Communist Party chief To Lam is also expected to visit North Korea in October, which would be the first visit by a Vietnamese leader in nearly 20 years, though this has not been officially confirmed.
South Korean officials have indicated that North Korea may hold a military parade for the event, commemorating the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
