Pentagon Introduces New Guidelines for Journalists Covering the Department

The Pentagon announced that journalists covering the department will only be allowed access to the building if they agree not to publish certain types of information. This new policy requires media representatives to sign an agreement restricting the publication of classified material as well as some unclassified information that is not officially designated as secret. The policy is expected to take effect within two to three weeks.
According to the agreement, any Defence Department information must be approved for public release by an authorised official before publication, even if it is unclassified. Failure to comply with these rules may result in suspension or revocation of building access.
Officials stated that the restrictions are necessary because unauthorised disclosures could pose security risks that may harm national security and put department personnel at risk.
This change follows previous steps to limit media access to the Pentagon. The new rules give the department broad authority to restrict access and revoke press credentials if journalists publish information deemed unsuitable for public release.
The policy comes amid broader efforts to address social media activity by military personnel and civilians, as well as ongoing discussions about free speech limitations.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth noted that the press must follow the rules to maintain access to the Pentagon’s secure facilities.
The Pentagon Press Association, which represents journalists covering the department, is currently reviewing the new directive.
Traditionally, reporters have had access to unclassified areas within the Pentagon, including offices of military leaders. Earlier this year, workspace access was reduced for several news organisations, with some areas reassigned to different outlets. Additional restrictions were implemented following concerns about security and information sharing.
Under current rules, journalists are limited to certain areas and must be escorted to move beyond those locations.
