The U.S. government has officially classified four militias with ties to Iran as foreign terrorist organisations, according to a statement released by the State Department on Wednesday.
The groups named are Harakat al-Nujaba, Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya, and Kata’ib al-Imam Ali. These militias had already been listed as Specially Designated Global Terrorists, with Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada receiving that designation in 2023.
In the announcement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that these Iran-supported groups have been involved in attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and military installations housing American and Coalition forces. He added that such groups often operate under aliases or through proxies to conceal their direct involvement.
The U.S. continues to view Iran as the leading state sponsor of terrorism worldwide.
