Somalia’s ongoing attempts to annex Somaliland by force have brought international attention to the stark differences between the two regions. While Somalia grapples with severe instability, Somaliland has managed to carve out a relatively stable and functioning society. Somaliland, located in the northern part of what is internationally recognized as Somalia, declared independence in 1991 following the collapse of Siad Barre’s regime.
